This is Version 3 of the Time Tunnel Mix. We've skipped version 2 and gone straight to 3. I've attempted to sort out the bassline, and along the way I've made a few more corrections based on the comments of V1. You may notice the Troughton/Baker/Pertwee/ spacey sound has been put in, and the bassline during the middle 8 now follows the original and not the Howell version. I have also added the rumble effect of the Tardis at the start of the track. This will probably be the last update to this track as I want to move onto other projects...but hope you enjoy ;)

It really is a lovely mix and a big improvement on v1. Typically, updates to old mixes get put in with the original versions (or that's what I've mostly done in the past), but given Time Tunnel's overwhelming popularity I've bent the rules this once. Of course it would have been nice to have v3 from the start... ;)

I think this arrangements only real failing is with the drums. I might be in the minority here (and I think I am, especially when it comes to drum programming), but the drums sound a bit weak, as if they've lost cohesiveness and kick through a low bitrate mp3 coding (but at 192kbps for this mix, that can't be the reason). The particular pattern used (not one of my favourites, to admit my prejudice) also feels a bit static to me, even though there is some variation.

Still, a great mix. Hope you update us on your future projects.
- mutagene (2005.08.02 20:18)

All I can say about version three is "bloody brilliant".
- Matthew (2005.08.02 22:29)

I heard this on your other site as you recommended. And i'd just like to say...WOW.
- S.N (UK) (2005.08.02 23:31)

wow, I like this one way better then the first one!
encore!
encore!
- Timelord (2005.08.02 23:45)

WOW ITS SO GOOD I A BIG FAN OF DR.WHO BUT CAN YOU BUT ON THE SITE THAT DR WHO THEME TUNE NO REMEX PLEASE
I REKEMENDED IT 6/7
- SCOTT WHITE (2005.08.03 01:54)

A great improvement over the previous version. The new bassline improves the mix enormously. Although the synth pads that featured heavily previously now seem to be faded into the background a bit too much. Bringing them forward into the mix more prominently would add much needed feeling.

But this is a minor criticism of such a good mix. Keep up the good work!
- Oddsprite (2005.08.03 03:39)

Agreed. Better than before dude. Cooler indeed!!

Rating- 9.96 of 10. :)
- starfire15 (2005.08.03 04:27)

i knew it would be even better when you finished it, well done buddy!!!!!!!!!
- lukee (2005.08.03 04:47)

I loved this theme before, and I just wanted to personally thank you for improving the bassline and especially changing it from Howell to Derbyshire on the bridge. Thank you so much -- this is one of my contenders for best theme ever! Brilliant work, my friend!
- Danny Stewart (2005.08.03 05:33)

Thanks again...Its been a fun few weeks working on this and I really appreciate all the great things said about it.

My next project may be a hybrid with this and Murray Gold's version, just to see how it sounds. Well, i'm toying with the idea anyway, after maybe a small break ;)

- Chris (Hardwire) (2005.08.03 05:57)

WOWEEEE! You took a great remix and improved on it. I really enjoyed it (Playing the secodn time through and getting ready to burn it on CD.)
- jeriwho (2005.08.03 08:45)

SUBMIT THIS TO THE BBC, AND I BET US BRITISH WILL BE LISTENING TO THIS BY CHRISTMAS TIME!!!!!! AND You may even become the spearhead of the next radiophonic workshop....
- Guest user strikes again (2005.08.03 09:24)

This is now my all-time favourite version of the Doctor Who theme. I love the reverb, layering, and the instruments you chose. The only thing that seems a bit out of place is the one-note brass that follows the main organ every so often. Fantastic job! I hope to hear more in the future.
- Trenchcoat Steve (2005.08.03 13:55)

Eagerly awaited - Just about everyones said it, it is a fantastic version, I have been thro' most on this site, several are very good...but this...! You have kept it so true to the whole feel of the Doctor Who theme. As I said of version1 it should be submitted for the 2nd series. I love the improvements you have made to the bass (tho' the howell bassline in the middle 8 will always get my vote leave it in it sounds pacier! Dont listen to howell-haters...). And have you seen how it fits the title sequence?? Once you've shortened the electronic-scream start it is an awesome fit. Gold, get your coat and take your horns home...I want this one on tv please.... Come on, campaign starts here.
- James P (2005.08.03 14:52)

I agree with james P this one should be the 10th doctor's theme time to pack your bags Mr Gold its harwire's turn
- Matthew (2005.08.03 19:58)

I much rather like the baseline in the first version you made, but this version is brilliant to. It could even be used on the TV series it's so professional.

Well done!
- Keith (2005.08.03 21:30)

Many thanks indeed. I did submit the track to the BBC but they swiftly turned it down (i don't think they even listened to it) but hey ho, maybe it will get noticed by someone else ;)
- Chris (Hardwire) (2005.08.04 01:21)

excellent
- blabla.com (2005.08.04 01:57)

I agree with Oddsprite, where have those Synth Pads gone...barely audible now. :-(

Much improved on the other version, but i still dont like samples ripped form the originals sorry...cheap and nasty.

The best on this site by far (and you can tell by how many downloads its achieved) because its "original" is 'Doctor Who Theme 1996' by The Prydonian Renegades - now that kicks ass!
'Time Tunnel' is just a re-hash of the original which should be laid to rest as it cant be beaten!
- Who Know's? (2005.08.04 06:08)

It's nearly there - the bassline sounds much better! However the organ sound is now a little too dominant at the end of the opening phrases, as it also abruptly ends rather than fading. The drums appear a little too dry and could do with an emphasising rhythm rather than just a tempo filler, although perhaps this is a result of the synths disappearing into the background.

I don't agree that the best on the site is 'DW Theme 1996' simply because it misses the essence of a DW theme. It's all big drums and horns - not alien sounding at all. It's a skilful construction sure, but it's not DW despite is huge number of downloads (maybe people are thinking they are getting a variation on the Mcgann theme as I did!). So this one is superior in that it preserves an alien sound - however it would be better if none of the sounds were sampled from the original but completely regenerated as Howell did. Perhaps a v4?

- Nick (2005.08.04 07:18)

The synth pads are back in on Version 4 which can be downloaded from my site ..
Re: Who Know's?: Its good to have a few diverse opinions of this track... however it isn't supposed to sound too different from the original, just to bring the original up to date. I don't know about you but I would like to hear the original back in the opening but being heard more prominently. This track tries to do that...but ok, you don't like samples. Thats cool because I don't often work using them, and when i'm done with this version I will be working on some Doctor Who material that doesn't contain any...sound good? ;)
You're right though, the original can't be beaten..
- Hardwire (2005.08.04 08:45)

There are about four that I regard as "Best on the site," and the 1996 theme is defintiely one of them.
- jeriwho (2005.08.04 09:03)

is this the same Nick that produced 'Evolution' and 'Regenerations'?

thx Jeriwho, someone with sense afterall. :-)
- Who Know's? (2005.08.04 09:31)

Its funny how the theme can be made to sound faster without actually altering the speed..

once again a theme to bounce along to ....its cybermen on trampolines doing aerobics time :)
- JoGGer (2005.08.04 09:59)

Amazing should be for the next Doctor!!!!
- Dalekanium (2005.08.04 13:00)

Both versions of this are simple spectacular
- Phil (2005.08.04 13:30)

simply, sorry. simply spectacular. I hate typos
- Phil (2005.08.04 13:31)

I agree Can't decide which one I prefer.
They are both Brilliant!
- Dalekanium (2005.08.04 16:50)

Better than your first attempt, but still not my cup of tea, those drums sound too straight forward, though the machine gun gives it a bit of newness it is otherwise pretty down to Earth. Hate to be the voice of descent among so many who like it.
- JDX (2005.08.04 23:48)

Beautiful. A little more low end out of the kick drum, and perhaps a snippet of the Murray Gold orchestral accompaniment, and you'd have people salavating. As it is, Wonderfully executed.
- E. Adam Thomas (2005.08.05 01:34)

Just listened to VERSION 4 on your site, sorry, i know you've had alot of critisms over the 'many' versions, but i think the synth pads now feature to prominently (only in some tiny places with the bass line, good sampling by the way). And the organ some how has lost it's spark as it sounds to sharp against the bassline and melody.

But besides that, again, the piece is fantastic work! Well done. Love the newer ending...
- S.N (UK) (2005.08.05 01:44)

Have to say I agree with Nick's comments above - the big difference between this arrangement and the 1996 Prydonian Renegades mix is that this one feels like Dr Who. That said, I think the intentions of the arrangers were different - the 1996 mix is deliberately not trying to recreate the original.
- Rob Thorpe (2005.08.05 06:56)

Spot on Rob, thanks. I have heard the 1996 Prydonian Renegades mix and I like it a lot. Although it doesn't use any original sounds, It seems to fit more as a would be theme for TV, whereas mine sounds more like it belongs on a dancefloor.
I've tried to get an all round balance to accomodate the feedback on this site, but ultimatley Its impossible to please everyone. But the good far outweighs the bad, so overall i've done what I set out to do...make whomix thats close to the original that many of you are enjoying ;)
- Hardwire (2005.08.05 07:38)

You've defintiely created a terrific sound, Hardwire. The category of "excellent" encompasses a wide range of different methods, sounds, and tastes. My top picks are all highjly "listenable," (to me) but for different reasons. The 1996 version by Prydonian is just a masterpiece of what a person did with different sounds. Then again, so is High Noon, which is my current top favorite. I also love Skaro or Bust v2. And I love your version 3 of Time Tunnel. There is also a rock version by a fellow named Kriminal that I can play over and over again without tiring of it. And "I am a Timelord" (which is not its real name, but I forget the composer's title for it) is a sleeper that I think is one of the best. Leneker's tribute to the ninth is also one I can listen to often without tiring of it.

Geldomere Quote file, in fact, still gets me to listen with rapt attention, even though its music sound quality is somewhat diminished. But all of these different pieces handle the theme in different ways.

Well that's my list of top picks! What's yours?
- jeriwho (2005.08.05 10:47)

Nice! Listening to it, I was thinking, "this would be a great theme for Doctor #10"! You have kept the integrity of the original song. Many positive comments (on this site) come to versions of the theme that adhere to the original's essence. Can you say this piece is contemporary? Sure... that is what makes a good Who theme timely! Does Pertwee's theme match his 'time'? Does Colin Baker's theme reflect his time (and coat!)? You bet. I guess what I'm trying to say is, in my opinion Hardwire, you have made a fantastic Doctor Who theme, that would complement the current Doctor series! Thank you for exciting my eardrums!
- sirh. (2005.08.05 16:37)

Bloody Hell! The hairs are standing up on the back of my neck. What a superb mix! The Tardis sounds all the way through, just layered perfectly...The point at 1:27 where you hear the engines THUMP.. THRUMMM in their first few second of buildup, which no-one's used before. Superb.. Very nicely done.

Submit this to the Beeb! It's time to let Murray Gold, know he's been SERVED. :)
- Nick, Some Planet's North (2005.08.06 06:01)

As of now, this is officailly my favourite mix on this site!!
Bloody excellent! Captures the feel of the original and compliments it nicely.

Lovely soundtrack!
- Ginger Dalek, Kent, UK (2005.08.07 14:09)

I wouldn't say its better than v1...but bloody ace nontheless. One small Q - is it the TARDIS at 1.27...or a door? Anyway keep up the good work!!!
- Pydos (2005.08.09 01:41)

Hardwire, as you said earlier that you don't normally use samples, i would be very greatful to see someone or you with your talent, remix the theme tune but with the combination of classical orchestration and also heavy techno. I have been dieing to see if this would work.
So will someone try my suggestion? Please!
- S.N (UK) (2005.08.09 11:58)

@Pydos: Yes thats the Tardis at 1.27. Its the boom effect, heard in An Unearthly Child just as the TARDIS takes off.
@S.N: I am working with others on similar projects, so something like this may come your way soon ;)
- Hardwire (2005.08.09 12:27)

Great remix! I usually go for the soundtrack versions rather than the techno. But as someone else has said you have kept the spirit of the original theme but brought it bang up to date. To everyone posting stuff on this site - keep it up you are all doing a fantastic job. As a non-musical person I am in awe of the talent out there. keep it coming
- darmok (2005.08.09 14:17)

I can't see why the BBC rejected your version. The theme has more enegry and has a more space like feel. I think the idea of going McGann with the theme for the new series was a mistake. I mean every score can't be "John Williamsd"
- Matthew (2005.08.10 07:14)

The odd thing about this one is it sort of sounds like you pick up right where Stephen Sherry left off in his mix :P
- Allan Spears (2005.08.10 20:44)

wow! that was the best song i have had my ears enjoy!!! it sounds like all the doctors put together even the 9th! that is the totally best doctor who mix i have heard !!!! well done !outstanding effort
- doctor ben kelly (2005.08.11 03:47)

Me...again, just listened to your Murray Gold mergence piece. Outstanding, how do you work so fast? Great other pieces by the way...
- S.N (UK) (2005.08.11 03:56)

me again in my opinion yours and Murray Golds compared yours is far better, but I'm not offending Murray Gold
- blabla.com (2005.08.12 11:30)

love it, well done on this one
- Chris (2005.08.12 14:45)

If you wish to see a video to go with the mix go to

I just watched the video. Mega-cool!
- jeriwho (2005.08.13 06:32)

The 'Multidimensional Mix' (try saying that when your drunk!) on your link is "THE DOGS!"

Well done Chris aka Hardwire. :-D
- Who Know's? (2005.08.13 17:50)

lol, yes its a mouthful!...cheers Who Know's, glad you like it dude ;)

- Chris (Hardwire) (2005.08.14 15:01)

i loved it send it to the BBC (again) and this time make sure they hear it this time. well done
- Jason namdaed (2005.08.15 02:43)

And how would you force them to listen to it?! ;)
- David (2005.08.15 14:06)

no idea suggestions
- Jason namdaed (2005.08.16 19:24)

Note to everyone....the link to my music is currenly down and will be at a different location in a few days, so I will post the new link asap ;)
- Hardwire (2005.08.18 08:38)

Oh I like this one. Reminds me of Tom Baker: Happy, Jovial, and full of Jelly Babies. ^_^
- Alex Stone - Texas (2005.08.22 04:35)

This is superb!!! Although i would have liked the drum beat to kick in!! I was kind of waiting for a heavy bass dtum to lift up behind it! But thats just me and what i like... Honestly this is oneof the best remixes i have heard for a while!
- Chris Rice (2005.08.23 12:51)

thanks Chris, and everyone for the great feedback! ;)
I will probably poat another track soon, but for now my stuff can now be located at http://mediatrax.david-s.co.uk/
- Chris (Hardwire) (2005.08.25 14:00)

Personally I think this remix is slightly overrated, but I can also see why...

The theme draws heavily on the original Ron Grainer arrangement and is basically just a re-hashed, re-preformed rendition with a dancy beat and a few new pops and clicks added.

It's boppy and cool, but I like my themes to be a bit more original than this one (unless it's a fusion). To be honest, I don't think this can be compared with Murray Gold's arrangement - it's just not "that" good, but that said its also still well worth a listen (or 10)!!

Very well done, but overrated.

6/10
- Zoidberg (2005.08.29 03:43)

I'm no muscian but I know a good tune when I hear it - and this is one! Loved the original, but as someone who was brought up on the Tom Baker theme (and I'm adamant that the rot started when they brought in the Howell theme), this one does the business for me. Possibly the best remix of the theme I've heard - and that includes murray Gold and Orbital's attempt. Love the little samples and especially the underlying strings. Brilliant!

Cheers, mate. Top notch!
- The Wooksta! (2005.09.19 22:58)

This is the best version ever! The bass draws the mind into its dynamic resonance, bouncing along at light speed through the time vortex like a galactic rollercoaster. Fantastic. I'm listening to it again!
- greg jones (2005.10.01 06:18)

CAN U DO A PETER DAVISION 1 cause this is fantastic

As the 9h doctor would say fantastic
- Anon (2005.10.04 07:12)

That's a great remix of the Doctor Who theme music keep up the good work!
- Bill (2005.10.07 17:50)

An amazing effort. It has promted me to produce another video mock, using Peter Davison's opening and closing titles. From the episode 'The Visitation'. Have a look, let me know if you approve and I will link it up to my Doctor Who page.

- Jonny Porter (2005.10.18 12:21)

I was very disappointed by the opening titles of the new series when I first saw them (they're basically just a recording of a Windows Media Player visualization with a graphic of the TARDIS overlayed) and was particularly unimpressed with the new arrangement of the theme tune. This, clearly, is the theme they should have used! It's true that it's a rehash of the original arrangement, but since that's the version that most people associate with the programme and are affectionate towards, what's wrong with that? This version updates the original beautifully and manages to make it sound fresh and dynamic all over again. The only downside to it is that it makes the Murray Gold version sound even more tedious by comparison and will increase my sense of dissatisfaction every time I watch the new series.
- Joseph (2005.12.07 11:58)

Can I just point out to Joseph that the opening titles of the new series are not a WMP visualisation. It was probably made with a program similar to Bryce 3D. Anyway, this Time Tunnel version of the theme is frankly magnificent.

The use of the Tardis noise and the way the 'wee-wah-woo' paused is brilliant. The use of the spacey noise at the beginning is good. With reference to the BBC's rejection - the British Broadcasting Corporation never ceases to amaze me.
- Jonathan, the Time Vortex (2005.12.21 09:19)

Just listened to version 4 of the time tunnel mix.

A lot sharper. A lot clearer and I'm glad the synths have been improved it makes it more interesting to listen to than just the same elements all the way thru.

- Deanstructor (2006.02.05 05:01)

Very good, although I do prefer the first version myself
- Josh (2006.04.02 12:37)

hardwire all i can say is that you are a man on pure talent every rendition you do seems to suit what you're basing it on especially the murry gold one's which in my eyes are better worked than the actual theme but this one would of been good as a john pertwee era theme well done mate u are truly an artist of major calibre
- doctor darren (2006.04.04 07:18)

This version is as close as the original as I think anybody can get. Great work!
- AA (2006.04.20 18:23)

Love this mix. Personally, I am a fan of Gold, so I'd stick with him, but I think of all those webcasts and radio series which have gone without a good theme- Unbound, Death Comes To Time etc. This version is really epic, and the reviewer above was right when he said it sounded like all the old mixes put together. This is without a doubt my favourite 'straight' adaptation of the theme on this site (ie. One that could be used for the TV series)

Although I don't mean to criticise, Version 3 is perfect, why did you bother making a Version 4? (Too heavy on the drums for my liking)
- John Laidlaw (2006.04.21 11:47)

Hi John! Sorry I keep answering for HardWire here (I hope he doesn't mind), but we tend to work together a lot so I hope I know what I'm talking about. Anyway, he did version 4 because he was able to obtain a much longer sample of the Derbyshire bassline that varies in all the right places, rather than just a repeated one-note "dum." To my knowledge, I'm not aware of any drum changes -- I thought he only redid it because he found the new bassline clip! I could well be mistaken though and that would be best responded to by HardWire himself.
- Danny Stewart (2006.04.22 20:45)

Really, really, good. v4 reminds me of the Shalka theme, which is a good thing - I loved that one to bits. All you need is the TARDIS noise in the background...!

No, I think the TARDIS noise spoilt the Shalka theme and hearing a similiar theme without it, I prefer it that way. Keep 'em coming! (next up, Keff McCullough?)
- David Kendal (2006.05.01 05:52)

It's great .i love it "applause" I love your versions and loo forward to more of them.
- Neal (2006.05.09 21:34)

Well done man , well done. This one's a keeper!
Ilook to see more of your work here soon.
- DVR (2006.05.26 17:24)

great site loved all the tunes thanks just put them on my phone lol
- bob (2006.06.17 15:27)

Derbyshire with CHARACTER! I like it. I rank your remix right up there with Dennis McCarthy's re-rendering of Jerry Goldsmith's Star Trek TMP theme.

You've EARNED every kudos on this page. Ms. Derbyshire is probably flapping her wings to this beat!

Very well done. I rank you, Oddsprite and M. Jessop in my list of musicians I will be calling when I do my Doctor Who movie.
- Will (2006.08.10 14:00)

I listened to V1 and I thought it was brilliant. I listened to this, loved it and thought "Why have we skipped V2! I want more!"
- Nyder (2006.08.14 03:58)

This is now part of my Willmix list on my Windows Media Player. Version 4.........
- Will (2006.08.22 23:20)

I can't get the film which appears when you copy the code to move. How can I?
- Ben (2007.01.18 13:13)

This is easily the best mix on this site! Came across this as someone else had used a very short snippet on a Dr Who experimental visual, and it refers you here. Very glad I looked now! I love the new interpretation of the original themes, and much better than the latest 'official' version on the BBC.
- Lostash (2007.03.01 22:17)

A nice bouncy, faithful rendition! However, the delayed lead organ in the background spoils it by cutting through to much!
- John Smilth (2007.04.16 15:36)

Cool, though the synth-pads are gone, from v1. but apart from that, 'funtustic!'
- Doctor John Smith (2007.08.26 00:52)

Cool, though the synth-pads are gone, from v1. but apart from that, 'funtustic!'

oh and John Smith, you bastard.
- Doctor John Smith (2007.08.26 00:53)

- syvtziplh quzafd (2007.09.16 19:15)

I've listened to all of the new stuff thats been posted, and this is STILL the best mix on this site. And it gets better with age.
- Lostash. (2007.10.25 17:11)

Don't worry, Hardwire. i guess the Beeb ain't ready to go back to electronic music yet.

- Dalek (2007.11.17 15:10)

Please continue to update this - perhaps give us a proper opening and closiing theme. This is the only one I keep coming back to.
- Joseph (2007.12.20 17:32)

I suppose this is really cool. Did you know that the Wiggles Bonus Episode the fever of winnie-the-pooh is the fifth part of Return of the Simpsons every now and then? It appears where Darby meets Christopher Robin for the first time. At night, the Wiggles arrive at the castle of Mr Sanders/Winnie-the-Pooh's house for them and their new pals discover Darby and Christopher Robin kissing on the top of the castle's tower for the very first time.
- Doctor Who, Private Eye (2008.08.24 20:57)

Then at 12.30am on Friday, Christopher Robin and Darby Sleuth get married and she becomes Darby Robin and has secs with Christopher. Then the Wiggles and their new friends wonder why she got a new outfit and tried it on when they were engaged. Repeat - this music's really cool.
- Dr.Who, Private Eye (2008.08.24 21:03)

This is quite special. Love that bassline, very similar to what I had planned to do back in 2004

- Stephen Sherry (2009.02.12 13:39)

Could you help me. The knowledge of the world is only to be acquired in the world, and not in a closet.
I am from Tuvalu and learning to write in English, give true I wrote the following sentence: "Buy quality clocks and barometers online."

Thanks for the help :-D, Noreen.
