I have tried to do something a little different this time. I have slowed
the theme down and added in a new orchestral break. The beat is still
chemical/break beat and there are plenty of who samples as normal with my
mixes. I have not really added many new samples but re-used some from my
previous mixes. They kind of fit in with what the mix is trying to portray,
a Trip Through Time!!
I'm not going to go all technical about what effects I have used etc... it's
all been done in Reason 2.5. Hope you enjoy. Development and Positive
feedback very welcome! |

not that good u could do a lot better and make it sound like the original dr who theme
- the doctor ( the new timelord) (2006.03.20 22:43)
I really enjoyed this one - true to its name, it was a great slice of mid-90s nostalgia.
- mutagene (2006.03.20 23:22)
Love it
- charlie (2006.03.20 23:53)
Sorry - not to my taste! The quotes sounded like they'd been run while the battery was running down and were almost inaudible - you got the "big beat" part right - it almost drowned out the main theme tune - and where was the Middle-Eight!!
- Dan P (2006.03.21 11:03)
Well, I really liked this.. particularly liked the bass line - At about 1:10 it made me think of a cross between Dr Who meets Radio Ga Ga (Queen).Very nicely done
It's tricky to come up with something in 4/4 that's got that Dr Who 'flavour' and if everything that was submitted was either a replica or at the very least in compound time it would get pretty dull, pretty quick, so good on yer.
Incidentally, I also like the screwy little squeak in the percussion - is it a bike pump sample by any chance? : ) Nice...
- JeX (2006.03.21 15:00)
I liked the underlying beat and sounds and synths used in this, but I found the quotes to be hard to pick out. Not sure if this is just a levels issue that is easily fixed. I think if you include sampled quotes in the mix, you've got to be able to hear them clearly without needing to 'dig' into the sound too much or it just confuses and distracts the ear.
Otherwise, very nice. High quality (as usual from you!) and a very catchy beat.
- Allan Spears (2006.03.21 15:51)
Very nice mix. Perfect tempo. Regarding the Hartnell quotes at the beginning, perhaps speed them up a tad so they are more coherent. Very original while maintaining the Doctor Who sound.
- Milamber (2006.03.21 19:12)
Thanks for your feedback, everything to do with the vocals being drowned is to do with my amature sound mixing. I'm just useless at it. I have listened to the samples so many times that they just sounded ok to me. I wish i new somone who could do the final mix for me. The squeaky bit in the beat, well I liked that to! I have to be honest and say I don't know what it is really, i ripped the beat and then looped it. I make my beats up by layering several ripped beats together.
As for the middle 8!! Well Murry Gold's got it! ;-).
- Chris Rice (2006.03.22 03:04)
If you get an engineer to help you with the final mix, please refer him to me! I hate doing the final mix, too, especially since all that time trying to get the levels just right (and never succeeding) takes time away from writing more music and is detrimental to my hearing (at least if I'm on headphones -- not good for mixing, but necessary much of the time).
That said, the voice samples came out clear as day on my headphones. Perhaps more of a headphone-friendly mix?
- mutagene (2006.03.22 03:33)
The enitre track was written using headphones! To me it's the best form of sound, and the best way to hear the music! The trouble is when you listen to your music time and time again, you kind of loose what part of the mix sounds wrong, everything blurs into sounding ok!. Of course that's why there are such things as sound engineers as they are the professionals at making the final mix. I spent two days in a recording studio once, this was just to create the final mix!
- Chris Rice (2006.03.22 04:48)
Wow, that was really cool! I would agree that with headphones it's a lot easier to listen to. This is definitely something I could listen to over and over again whilst working out. Great job!

I ike this one a lot...but the vocals are a little distracting. If i strain to hear it i can understand the quotes (especially as they are famous ones) but they can be a bit annoying otherwise. And yes i'm using fairly good quality headphones, so i can't understand what Mutagene is suggesting. Still what do i know? Keep it up
- Pydos (2006.03.27 04:51)
This is just superb. The quality of the samples, the feel of the song, everything, are all perfect. Very reminiscent of the mid-to-late 80s and early 90s. If anyone remembers back then, songs sounded just like this, with gritty, grimy samples, probably because of the analogue equipment. Yes, it sounds grimy, but to me, it's an absolutely superb and faithful teleport back in time. I wouldn't be surprised if I found this song nestling between radio edits of Kraftwerk's the Robots and Jean Michelle Jarre's Oxygen on one of my old mix tapes. Yes, the vocals are distracting, but songs were like that back then! Well done! Very faithful, and makes me smile to think of those happy days :)
- Nick, Some planet's North. (2006.04.05 10:22)
I have listened to most of the remixes on this site and this is one of my favorites. Excelent work! Oh and I can hear all the voice samples just fine on my computer speakers. I also didnt find them distracting at all. The faint and echo-y quality fit quite well. I thought they were blended in perfectly.
- Anonymous (2006.04.15 18:53)
What can I say - man I think your remixes are fantastic!! Keep them coming
- nh313066 (2006.04.20 01:51)
wow - i love the bit somewhere in the middle with samples from the 9th doctor over the orchestra bit (don't know why, but its great). the beats are also good (even if they are ripped)
- will s-h (2006.04.22 13:45)
Nice! I like the opening, and the beats. The samples are an excellent choice. Keep up the good work!
- Anony Mouse (2006.04.27 21:59)
A truly lovely and upbeat "ambient-chill" homage.
- HighCalm (2006.05.09 07:57)
A good mix for those of us who like "techno-chill" tunes. Unlike other mixes here, this one doesn't sound like it was banged out in someones basement with a Yamaha home organ !

- Darell V Rider (2006.05.20 12:46)
I think people who complain about it "not sounding like the original" have completely missed the point of this project. Very clean production. Not sure the samples are needed though.
- Hardklebb (2006.06.04 03:37)
I loved this! I thought the quotes actually sounded just right, i don't think they would have been as effective if they had been any clearer. I keep playing this one over and over on my mp3 player. Brilliant job
- lupusnocens (2006.06.04 06:19)
Fantastic breat work loved it take a bag of jelly babyes
- Dr ? (2006.06.10 19:07)
it is all right and good at the begining BUT I AM AFRAID IT IS too long!!
- mike who (2006.06.27 09:02)
I was bored 26 seconds seconds in! Next remix please!
- Anonymous (2006.06.27 09:59)
Anonymous... next remix already online! I tried to make this one a little more retro.... I can understand that its not to everyone's taste. Hopefully you will think the next mix has improved!
Mike Who, I have had comments to say my mixes are to short, so i make one longer and I get moaned at for making it to long! What do you feel is the correct length for a mix??
- Chris Rice (2006.06.28 05:48)
A good mix, but it doesn't go in my folder of mixs. The quotes spoil it 'cause they are from differant eras. If you could reverse the polarity of the neutron flow and concentrate on one era, then it would work.
- Nyder (2006.07.09 06:13)
This is absolutely gorgeous! I'm just an amateur listener, who doesn't know music from noise. But, I know what I like! In my opinion, this rocks. It keeps my feet tapping, and my mouth smiling. Headphones are THE way to go for this one. It mellows and kicks in all the right spots, and the sampled dialogue was always marvelously placed. I especially love how you keep going back to Susan explaining the TARDIS anagram ("Time And Relative Dimension In Space"). LOL! Beautiful! I'll be listening and sharing this with any and all fans of Who I come across. Well done, man. :)
- Prometheus (2006.08.24 22:55)
ignore everyone who slags this off its just right!
- Sorvad (2006.10.09 09:55)

- del boy (2006.11.03 19:26)
That was awesome and matrixish as i said, sorry for putting matrixish matrixish,in my tags i thought it would overwrite the previous one,and it is matrixish!I HERE IS A COOKIE,SIT,SHAKE.That was about a hour, you should turn it into a movie theme for a film called "Area 51"or"Unit 543"or something futuristic or which would suit your tune
- Dalek unit643 (2006.12.13 08:20)
Way cool! I love the indigant 1st Doctor calling out Polly and Ben! Rice your one of the bests on here. Do some more. This and Monsters are Coming are awsome. I'd talk to RTD about getting you and Murray Gold together to do something for the new series!
- E J (2007.02.07 20:57)
wow- the neuclear fusion drive blew and-like-sort of half looped the neutron flow in the HSA drive ...
- ME (2007.02.16 18:18)
What an amazing theme tune! I like all of Chris Rice's Work, especiallly the voiceovers! that whoosh at the end was sooooooooooooooooo unexpected
- Charlie George (2007.04.24 00:40)
nice work Chris, it really is a good flowing, quite up tempo, uplifting techno doctor who theme with some nice sound bites of Chris Eccleston about the police box.,..good work mate, even through in the First Doctor William Hartenell for good measure....cheers.....keep up the good work....nice train wind sounds to end too!
- Skillwho Phil (2007.04.24 08:49)
I remember the first time I listened to this aaaaaages ago, I didn't really like it that much. But now, listening to it again, I actually quite like it! Still not enough to download it, but I think my tastes in music have changed a bit since back then. Very good!
- Sir Blib of Doh (2007.06.24 00:50)
Damn spam...
Now about the mix, reminds a lot of Bomb the Bass (Tim Simenon). Very well done in the spirit of the era, it's simply brilliant ! (one of my very favourite ones and always on the playlist).
