OK, I've picked this up and put it down again a dozen times - just wasn't
sure how it would be received I guess, but in the end decided it was in the
spirit of a different take on the Who Theme. So armed with my Tower Of Power
sample CD, some James Brown samples and an idea for the bass-line I set out
to create a kind-of-funky-spooky, seventies thing. The title is 'Scooby Who'
(it's OK, there's no dog samples in it) - it was either that or 'Starsky &
Who?' : )
Quite a bit different from my previous attempts - 'lushed' up the harmonies
a bit and played around with some improvisations for the main theme. I think
I got a better quality master this time too - invested in some new cables
and some mastering software. The style is erm.. Shakatak/Tomita/Tower Of
Power-ish.
Anyways.. let's set the scene : The TARDIS grinds into appearance and the
Doc and Rose step out. The music starts and they have to shade their eyes
from stray reflections from the mirror-ball in the centre of the room. But
wait - what's this? On the stage.are they Cybermen!? No. dudes in silver
catsuits with legs that flare out to about 2 feet at the bottom. FAR OUT!
...Did I just say dudes??! Aarrghh. |

Nice and different. I really like that seventies feel you've put in.
- charlie (2006.04.04 23:56)
Oh yeah! You've really caught the seventies era with this. Can also hear the Scooby connection (especially with the intro). I love this well done. James Brown funking up the Tardis................PARTY ON DUDE!!
- D. Widdowson (2006.04.05 01:46)
Ooooooh I like this! Sounds very funky. If anyone has heard the title theme on the 'Daleks - The Early Years' VHS you'll understand when I say that this version is very similar.
Like myself, I love it when people describe how they see the scene where they imagine their music is played. Gives you an insight into the musicians thoughts. Very Cool ;-)
- EverybodyelsE (2006.04.05 03:27)
Hmm very very different to anything before! Unusual choice but it works
- Ross (2006.04.05 04:31)
I like this, cool and funky...yet funny too, I can just see all the doctors in flares discoing the night away:P
- Celebgil (2006.04.05 08:05)
Celebgil, yea that's exactly it - you've got to do something like this a little bit 'tongue-in-cheek', but at the same time I tried to keep the 'cheese' down to a minimum ;-)
- JeX (2006.04.05 09:50)
Oh Man, that is funky. Very very nicely done. I can't say it's my cup of tea, but I can appreciate a damn fine piece of work when I hear it. I just LOVE the brass da-da-ta-ta--da-da. I can see the four dudes at the back with the trumpets, swingin' away to the music. If only we could get some samples of Tom Baker giving it some "Get Down!". A lovely addition. Thank you for this! It's put a big smile on my face.
- Nick, Some planet's North (2006.04.05 10:13)
i absloutly love doctor who far more than any other programmes
- sian moss (2006.04.05 12:14)
Nicely done, JeX! This piece comes together in the kind of way that makes it seem like all these synths, samples, and clips were just MEANT to be this way and it does it credit. You've worked the Doctor Who melody and bass elements in well, but in all honesty I think this piece succeeds on its own without them! It's just a good groove, y'know?
This piece almost has a Jamiroquai vibe goin' on. Speaking of which, it'd be cool to hear a mash up mix of the Doctor Who theme and Emergency On Planet Earth.
Keep up the funk!
- Allan Spears (2006.04.05 17:52)
Yeah, when I say Jamiroquai I mean early Jamiroquai. Pre-"Travelling Without Moving" Jamiroquai.
- Allan Spears (2006.04.05 17:55)
Pertty flawless. It just . . . works. I'd love if you continued on this path, JeX, and created a series of funky mixes.
- Milamber (2006.04.05 21:31)
Excellent Jex! I Can't resist asking... Any chance of another entitled, "Doctor Doo ? Who are you?"
- James (2006.04.06 13:45)
In the words of the 9th Doctor "Fantastic". Absolutly 100% originality in that mix. So catchy and easy to listen to. So funky. Love it absolutly love it!!
- Chris Rice (2006.04.07 10:21)
Groovy, i can dig it 'dowg'... every element of funk 70's music i like is in there, in a great big melting pot of sweet soul and sci fi...
- S.N (UK) (2006.04.07 11:16)
liked all your other doctor who techno theme's. this one is unusal but great. I can't wait til you do a 6th or 7th dr one .
- kim (2006.04.10 01:00)
This is more of a general question, than a review for this particular mix....
Has anyone ever done a Carribian or Rag Time Mix??
- TemporalOrbit (2006.04.13 10:16)
Sorry to post here but these are exceptional circumstances.
It really is a shame about these internet vandals that post all this commercial and offensive material on websites such as these that allow for a freedom of speech. Furthermore, this website is of such importance to so many people (just look at the download numbers) in that is harbours such creativity and a loving passion for one of televisions enduring icons.
It is clear that mutagene puts a lot of work into this website and also has to put up with a lot of flak that is really uncalled for. Some people should realise that is really is a sin to kill a mockingbird.
Mutagene, you have my greatest respect.
- Harry (2006.04.15 20:39)
In regards to this mix, I feel you have created a disco mix sufficiently different to Mankinds version and Ron Grainers 1979 Disco version. And there is one word that can explain this: funk.
The samples are used seemlessly and the sound texture is rich and full. This is a fun piece, but is not what you would call humourous. Overall, highly enjoyable.
Your two previous mixes were of a good quality, but this one is so much better that I regard you as one of the better newer mixers to the site. Well done. Now I am wondering what you are going to do next!
- Harry (2006.04.15 20:46)
Funky and different - you've done as great as you possibly could in making a funk who theme without completely spoiling it. Even though it's a great piece of music i'd like to put in a request for a remix of the David Arnold Big Finish theme (preferably Season 2 which is the best of the two - and would appreciate it if they would make an extended version, seeing as the only extended theme on Danny Stewart's site is for Season 1 which is good, but not as good) - anyways, in the words of Doctor No. 10 - "Not bad - not bad at all!"
- Dan P (2006.04.19 02:06)
Hi Dan -- there's a new, proper extended version of the David Arnold theme up on my site now! Just redownload it! (The one up there before was just a looped version of the season one theme, which I didn't know until someone brought it to my attention and supplied me with the correct theme. Apparently, all versions for both seasons one and two were made from the extended version, which is the only version David Arnold himself made.) Anyway, check it out!
- Danny Stewart (2006.04.19 12:34)
This would not be out of place on The Fast Show - Nice
- hulahoop (2006.04.19 16:49)
Danny, what's up with your new site? On the old one all I had to do was right click on a theme and click "Save Target" and I had it in my folder (I can still do it now on the unsupported old site) but on the new one, I right-click on the "Download THEME, 2MB" (or whatever it is) and the file type is different or somethin' like that so it won't play it on Windows Media Player or go on my MP3! Is this cos I'm doing something wrong? Or are you not allowed to save your own copies of the files any more on your new site?
- Dan P (2006.04.20 01:56)
Hi Dan -- sorry about that! You're not supposed to be doing it by right-clicking, because I have it going through a download counter now rather than linking straight to the file. Just left-click on the download links and you should be just fine after it increments the counter and then redirects you to the file. Try that and let me know if you have any problems!
- Danny Stewart (2006.04.20 07:38)
wow what an ace and funky remix it as absolutely fantastic well worth a listen. youve realy put a great seventies spin on it
- derbyshire howell gold (2006.04.20 10:20)
Thnx Danny - the problem wasn't that I couldn't listen to it - but a bit of tinkering I managed to work out that I didn't have the right version of Quick Time to "Save Source" in my own files - I needed Quick Time Pro 7 (pity you have to buy it - but hey) I'm glad to see "Song For Ten" on there, I wish they'd realise a soundtrack of Series 1 and 2 with Song For Ten without the talking in the background - but this is by far the best version, better than the 10 second one they've got on the BBC site. I'm absolutely loving the Incidental Music for New Earth, especially when the Doctor and Face of Boe have a chat - I hope they do make a soundtrack, it'll be "Fantastic!" Anyways, thnx again Danny and once again, GREAT MIX JeX!
- Dan P (2006.04.21 01:58)
Truly, truly magnificent. A work of genius. The James Brown samples really top it off.
- Anonymous (2006.04.27 10:00)
Excellent, fantastic, and abolutely groovy! I wish I had enough focus to create mixes such as this. My mixes are haphazardly put together and get on everyone's nerves unlike this opus.
- James Rye (2006.05.01 00:07)
I almost fell off my chair laughing when this first started to play. As the ninth Doc says, "Fantastic!" (or was that, "Brilliant!"?). There's something cinematic about it, or maybe it's just the "funk" that reminds me of blacksploitation films of the 70's. The James Brown samples were perfect. I think you've turned out a great 70's version of the theme. You've got a tremendous ability to "translate" into a new style.
- jeriwho (2006.05.07 10:05)
This piece has a great 70s groove - it really is pretty funny, but also charming. Makes me tap my feet and shake my a$$.
- HighCalm (2006.05.09 10:00)
Very nice, linking this! Very different but most enjoyable. I would love to hear this playing in a bar of some sort
- HardWire (2006.05.17 15:08)
Sorry, don't like it. I can hardly hear the ooo-eee-ooo bit. More like a brass band atempting rock!
- Nyder (2006.05.23 10:56)
I been downloading various mixes from here, putting them on cd, and funking away to them in the car...but i have to say, this is definatly one of my favourites indeed!, just love all that funk, absoltly fantastic!
now all i need is a nice little mungo jerry variation :D
- geckoman70 (2006.05.25 03:14)
yeah!! The Perfect thing to lighten anhybody's day. After finally getting the chance toget back on the site, this is the perfect thing to get me back into the swing of things, I love the unique seventies style that you've kicked into it, something that in my view is very original. Keep up the good work.
- Ben Dawson Punshon (2006.06.01 04:39)
hi i thougt that the theme Scooby Who was highly enjoyable good work have a jelly baby
- Dr ? (2006.06.10 19:05)

- Celine Chatillon (2006.06.17 06:56)
Okay, who's got the disco ball? Very funkadelic. One of the most imaginative takes on the who theme I've run across on this site yet. Well done.
- J W (2006.06.24 23:58)
Wow, this brilliant. It's not recognisable as the Who theme apart from the few obvious bits, but as a take on many of the US soap/comedy tv themes from the 70's, it's superb.
There's one bit of it that stands out and makes me think of the theme from Taxi. . .I think it's Taxi.
Very psychodelic and chilled out. Love it.
- Admiral Bear (2006.07.08 14:14)
Admiral Bear - If you mean the bit at the end, its the riff from Starsky & Hutch. I had to fit that into a 70s take on the theme ; )
- JeX (2006.07.19 01:10)
Like gekoman i too am carefully selecting remixes and sticking them on a cd and Scooby Who is without doubt 1 of the most original ideas for a remix and it sounds great as well, Well done JeX, i think its a Corker :-)
- Timelord R101 (2006.09.10 14:23)
Well done Jex!
This is fan-bloody-tastic!
Love it!
- Cristo (2006.09.20 14:02)
too much like lift music! bits work but not enough at all to make it work as anything but 'lift music'. shame.
- Sorvad (2006.10.08 09:44)
Very 70's!
But I feel it had to much 70's feel then Doctor Who feel!
- timeman (2006.11.01 00:40)
If Dr Who was a early tacky 70's American detective series in the same kind of style to The Rockford Files or Colombo then this would be the kind of theme tune that I would choose however for a Sicence Fiction series this remix is a deffinate no no.
I would have to give it a B- though and 5 out of 10 because although I could never picture Dr Who while listening to the remix it does make me chuckle to imagine the Dr as a kind of Jim Rockford character chasing the bag guys in down town American in the early 70's.
- etlcstn (2006.11.15 17:13)
I like it. Though it does make me imagine the Doctor regenerating into Jamiroquai. But it's still pretty cool.
- Nick Rowley (2006.11.28 16:15)
i really like this it has an sound that is quite alluring and it sounds like somthing out of a 60s sci fi movie
- darryl white (2007.01.08 10:57)
dude...
lol, like an earlier poster said, this would still kick ass without the doctor who elements... where is my leisure suit? nice JB samples
- Fraeg (2007.03.10 02:35)
Jex m8. Love all ya work you've done with Dr.Who remixes.. V.professional and high quality :)
Keep em coming. Absolutly... Fantastic ! :)
- Andrew Joseph (2007.05.03 06:14)
The opening "Hey!" is from Wild Cherry - Play that Funky Music White Boy. "Fellas I'm ready to get up and do my thing" is from James Brown's "Sex Machine". Can't pick where the rest come from (I'm sure if I could be bothered they'd be in my CD collection somewhere).
All in all I think this is a first class effort, well done, the horns are the best part :)
- Chris (2007.07.07 07:12)
What an excellent mix! I've benn tinkering wit title sequences and in my 'spin off' show this theme is perfect.
have a look at what I've done. I did something similar with the eggae version. This is so smooth though.

I think of it as a favorite. but then I heard it loop twice and I started to notice thelack of who-ness. still like it. just annoying that I couldn't stop myself from getting critical. good work. sorry for being unclear. I still have no idea how I feel about it anymore! lol
- Sten Darker (2008.08.19 18:13)
