This is my second reinvisionment of the Doctor Who Theme for whomix. I was attempting to create a torrential chaotic mix in distinct contrast to my initial mix (The 13th Doctor) This is just the opening sweeper, I will produce a end title mix shortly.
This is something I put together at some point in either 2008 or 2009, but never really got around to uploading. I built it from scratch using Garage Band and the original sheet music. I then added in a drumline throughout, an opening sting, and a fadeout at the end. I also used two audio tracks for the main parts. You are free to use this arrangment, as long as I am given credit.

Oldskool Mix by Calvin Steward

Here's a little attempt at a Doctor Who theme remix, Oldskool style. I was messing around with a Music creation program called Reason 4 and found a few Synth combination's that i thought had that classic Doctor Who main riff sound when layered together, tweaked them a bit and then built this song around it. My original intention was to not include a drum beat, but after finding a really punchy TB-303 Emulator called E-Note Silverbox it kind of evolved into something that felt a bit more "Ravey". So i decided to add in a Trance arpeggio to accompany the main Bass riff and bumped up the tempo a bit, added plenty of modulation to the synths and picked out some Oldskool beat loops that i then cut together to keep it moving along nicely and ended up with this as a result.

My main inspiration for this in retrospect was probably being a Teenager during the Rave scene in the 1990's, i find it hard to open up Reason and not use some of those classic rave sounds which would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up back in the day. And being a long time Sci-Fi fan, an attempt to interpret the Doctor Who Theme somehow was irresistible.

This is my second attempt at making songs in Reason, it’s a great program and i have loads to learn but this was a great laugh to make even if it is not as faithful to the original song arrangement as i would like it to be (There are plenty of notes that need shifting etc, but I'm not up to the same standard as of some of you lot yet!).

Anyway, I hope you like it- I can take criticism (constructive or not) so please leave a comment.

If it goes down well, i will probably try few different versions and techniques as i figure out a bit more about the program. Thanks for listening!

Dark Fairytale by Eaglestriker

Hey!

Steven Moffat was asked in an interview how could he best describe his vision of 'Doctor Who', to which he replied "more dark fairytale". That's where the title of this short rendition and its flavour stems from.

Judging by the clips we've seen in both the January and February trailers, you can tell that there is definitely a much darker, magic-like tone - a bit like Alice in Wonderland...in space...yet frequently on Earth...

So that's what I wanted to get across in this version. Amy falling down the rabbit hole, with The Doctor riding a horse through a forest escaping a flying Dalek. Curiouser and curiouser.

Its very orchestral, mostly because I was thrilled with my EWQLSO Package that I received at Christmas and after making a few quiet test pieces, I wanted to make something very epic with those sounds. Also included in this mix are home-grown samples made from my trusty PSR-1500 and of course the Derbyshire elements, most of which were very thankfully provided by Danny Stewart! Thank you!

There are some weak points - too many to go through here - including a weak bassline, which I hoped to be something electronic but based on my experiences, I thought it best be omitted. I'm still changing my Middle 8 all the time, so the closing theme will be up in a couple of weeks once I get my Uni assignments out of the way!

Preceding the music is the opening dialogue segment between The Eleventh Doctor and Amy from the recent - and slightly psychotropic - trailer!

Hope you enjoy it!

P.S - Same as with my other mixes, feel absolutely free to use in any projects as long as you either credit me or no one at all!

Last of the Timelords MkII by Eaglestriker

Hi all,

First of all, a sincere apology. I released this on YouTube a long while ago, but wanted to do further work to it before sending it to Whomix. Alas, it remains the same, though this version is longer than the YouTube rendition which was itself a shortened version of this. It follows the same structure as the previous mix of the same title.

New or revised elements feature; such as alternative melody samples of my own, alongside the original Derbyshire samples provided by the wonderful Danny Stewart. I was going to eliminate the Derbyshire samples from this mix, but it felt like listening to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme without the banjo, or The Lark Ascending without violins. They just sounded so fundamental. The mix also includes a grinding electric guitar bassline, which was meant to give a punchy, engine vibe (I thought "what if the Tardis engines could sing?") but it didn't turn out as well as I hoped. Sounds like some inept guitar playing! (Which is exactly what it is, of course)

You also notice that Murray's previous versions of the theme actually feature quietly in the background. This is because I used them as a guide in the early stages (as a sort of musical scaffolding) but upon removing them, there was an exuberance in the strings in particular that had simply disappeared and I was unable to recreate. This was something I planned to rectify before sending this to Whomix, but I couldn't access my newly bought VSTi package until Christmas.

As ever with my mixes, this was cobbled together with MIDI Connections, a Yamaha PSR-1500, Nero Wave Editor, Sony ACID Music Studio and lots of tea.

I hope to send another newer mix very soon!

Thank you and sorry to all those who I've disappointed! My priorities keep shifting like a member of the Cult of Skaro in a panic attack!

Here's to Matt, Karen and the Moff! Hope their first series is a corker!

(Shada) by tris noon

I'm 14 years old and have been composing pieces of music like rock for about 1 year now. I have Reason 4.0 as a music software so i used this to create the dr who theme. I wanted to use a few good synth sounds which i spent a long time trying to get right so it would sound right in the mix. I knew with just synth's, the arrangement wouldn't be full enough so i decided to include an orchestra and a clap of cymbals in the background. To make it sound a bit more like sci - if i added a kind of strange whoozing in the background. I added about 3 layers of the bass line just to make it sound more bass - like. I got asked to do the theme for one of my friends who is currently producing a dr who audio series. I think dr who is good so i had a basic knowledge of how to recreate it, but i discussed with my friend what exactly he wanted. (He is a big dr who fan).

Howell 2010 by Rat Souffle

Hey all, latest remix here. I haven't done one in a while, but as the seeds of change are in the air for Doctor Who, I offer (what I hope to be) a fresh take on the Peter Howell theme. Completing and mixing the entire theme took about 5 hours (in contrast to Peter's puported 5 weeks). I didn't originally intend this to be purely Howell-inspired, so there are numerous nods to other themes (perhaps you can spot them?). Thanks also to Danny for providing me (perhaps inadvertantly) with a small sample from a MOD file which became a key component of the bassline.

I've put up a video of the theme set to a modified Peter Davison titles sequence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjKmPWN6yrk

Since my Cubase dongle died on me last fall, I've noodled around with some alternatives, including the quirky GoatTracker. I don't see GoatTracker fulfilling my audio needs over the long term, but it was a good bit of retro fun to work in a tightly constrained tracker environment. Made me appreciate what, though lacking synthesis, OctaMED had to offer in terms of editing and UI. More frustrating when it came time to record a wav, and I had to write the audio export routines myself -- but at least I could, given that GoatTracker's source was free for the modification.

Wasn't sure if I'd every upload this, but it being the (slightly) late 28th anniversary of the introduction of the Commodore 64 in January 1982. Ehh, why not.
